忠義國小是一所與古蹟並存的小學，校園規劃結合「建築美學」，融入「古蹟」與「文化」，兼顧古蹟保存與都市發展；規劃景觀步道，串聯各古蹟景點；守護校園文化資產，讓古蹟活化再利用；兼具優質校園景觀與城市景觀，校園即是教材園，為孩子營造優質的成長樂園，亦成為府城觀光景點。

Jhongyi Elementary School is a unique school which coexists with many historic sites. The design of the campus successfully combines architectural aesthetics with the integration of historic sites, culture and community. The school places equal importance on the preservation of historic sites and the development of city landscape. Through its reconstruction, landscape footways are constructed to connect different historic sites, and policies are made to protect the cultural properties on campus. The historic sites are therefore revitalized and integrated into modern life. The school’s high-quality landscape is in harmony with the city landscape. The campus itself is full of educational material. It is not only a high-quality playground for the children’s growth, but also an important tourist attraction of Tainan City.

1940年：汐見公學校創立

1940: Establishment of Shiomi Public School

中文：學校創立於日治時期昭和15年（1940年）4月1日，最初校址位於台南市南區（現今大成國中現址），當時命名為「臺南市汐見公學校」。 [1]

English: The school was founded on April 1, 1940 (Showa 15) during the Japanese colonial period. Its original campus was located in the South District of Tainan City (the current site of Dacheng Junior High School) and was initially named "Tainan City Shiomi Public School." [1]

1953年：遷至現址與定名「忠義國小」

1953: Relocation to the Current Site and Naming of "Zhongyi Elementary School"

中文：配合擴校需求，學校與台南市立中學互換校地，正式搬遷至台南孔廟西側現址（原清代海東書院與日治台南神社外苑），並因面臨忠義路而更名為「臺南市中西區忠義國民小學」。 [1, 2]

English: To accommodate expansion needs, the school swapped campuses with Tainan Municipal Junior High School. It officially relocated to its current site on the west side of the Tainan Confucius Temple (formerly the Qing Dynasty Haidong Academy and the outer grounds of the Japanese-era Tainan Shrine). Facing Zhongyi Road, it was renamed "Tainan City West Central District Zhongyi Elementary School." [1, 2]

1953年～1990年代：古蹟接收與老樹群的陪伴

1953–1990s: Acquisition of Historical Heritage and the Companionship of Ancient Trees

中文：遷校後，校方接收了戰後倖存的「原臺南神社事務所」作為辦公室與宿舍。此時，校園內由清代及日治時期留存下來的古榕、老茄苳、竹柏，以及清乾隆年間種植（高達250歲）的全台校園最老黃連木等珍貴老樹群，開始陪伴代代忠義學子成長。 [1, 2, 3]

English: Following the relocation, the school took over the post-war surviving "Former Tainan Shrine Office" to serve as administrative offices and dormitories. During this period, generations of Zhongyi students grew up alongside a collection of precious old trees dating back to the Qing Dynasty and Japanese colonial period—including ancient banyans, old redcedars (bischofia), Nagi trees, and Taiwan's oldest campus Chinese pistache tree, which was planted during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty and is over 250 years old. 2004年～2005年：開放式生態校園與武德殿禮堂落成

2004–2005: Open Ecological Campus and Completion of the Wude Hall Auditorium

中文：配合孔廟文化園區規劃，學校進行校園重建工程，拆除圍牆，轉型為完全開放式的森林生態校園。2004年「原臺南神社事務所」被指定為市定古蹟；2005年「原臺南武德殿」修復完成，正式成為學校的古蹟禮堂。

English: In alignment with the planning of the Confucius Temple Cultural Zone, the school underwent a campus reconstruction project. The perimeter walls were demolished, transforming the school into a fully open forest ecological campus. In 2004, the "Former Tainan Shrine Office" was designated as a municipal historic site. In 2005, the restoration of the "Former Tainan Wude Hall" was completed, officially serving as the school's historic auditorium.

2015年：操場跑道退縮，首創「還地於樹」工程

2015: Track Retraction, Pioneering the "Giving Land Back to Trees" Project

中文：因校內多棵被台南市政府列管的珍貴老樹（如操場旁老榕樹）根部造成跑道隆起、生長受限，校方在2015年施作PU跑道時，主動將5線跑道縮減為3線跑道，配合民間團體進行去水泥化、土壤改善，創下校園為了保護列管老樹而退縮跑道的護樹典範。 [1]

English: Because the roots of several precious trees protected by the Tainan City Government (such as the old banyan tree next to the sports field) caused the running track to buckle and restricted tree growth, the school took the initiative during the 2015 PU track renovation to reduce the 5-lane track to 3 lanes. Working with civic organizations, they implemented decementification and soil improvement, setting a pioneering example of a school retracting its sports track to protect government-listed old trees. 2023年：百歲老榕颱風傾倒，啟動生命教育追思

2023: Centenary Banyan Uprooted by Typhoon, Launching Life Education Memorial

中文：校內歷史悠久、由市府列管編號88號的百歲老榕樹，雖經多年褐根病醫治搶救，仍於2023年7月不敵杜蘇芮颱風強風而傾倒斷裂。校方隨後為其舉辦了溫馨的師生獻花追思會，並保留部分木材作為生命教育教材，將老樹記憶化為校園文化的一部分。

English: The school's historic, government-listed old banyan tree (No. 88), despite years of treatment and rescue efforts for brown root rot disease, succumbed to the fierce winds of Typhoon Doksuri in July 2023 and collapsed. The school subsequently held a heartwarming memorial service where teachers and students offered flowers. Portions of the wood were preserved as teaching materials for life education, weaving the memory of the old tree into the fabric of the campus culture.
